Master programme in Natural Resource Governance
120 credits, programme, master's level, FMNFA
The master’s in Natural Resource Governance is a multidisciplinary education programme at the advanced level, suitable for students who want to be a part of shaping the sustainable use of natural resources. The programme will give you unique skills that are highly sought-after in the labour market.
The master’s programme in Natural Resource Governance (Naturresursförvaltning) comprises two years of full-time study (120 credits) and leads to a master’s degree. Natural resource governance involves the study of society’s management of the use of natural resources from a multidisciplinary perspective with the aim of achieving sustainable development. The starting point is governance designed through the interaction between state, market and civil society at various administrative levels and over time.
In the first academic year, you will take courses that introduce you to the field of Natural Resource Governance – the concepts, stakeholders, natural resources, laws and regulations – and which analyse target and land use conflicts in the use and management of natural resources. During the second academic year, you will take courses on social science theories and methods in the study of natural resource management. Alongside these you will also take optional courses, alternatively specialisation specific courses, in history, economics or political science. The programme ends with a degree project worth 30 credits in Natural Resource Management. The programme courses are interdisciplinary with an emphasis on social sciences and include project and field-based learning in close collaboration with various public stakeholders.
The programme consists of a total of 120 higher education credits, 105 credits of which are compulsory courses at the advanced level (including your degree project) and 15 credits of specialization-specific or optional courses. You may choose to specialize in history, economics or political science. Specialization must be chosen at the time of application, see the special prerequisites for more information.
For admission to a degree project course, the prerequisites specified in the syllabus must be met. Specific information about the application and admission procedures for degree projects are set by the department offering the course.
A beginner’s course in Swedish worth three higher education credits is available for foreign students. This course is not included in the degree and is offered in addition to the compulsory courses in the programme.
After completing your degree, opportunities to work for a wide variety of government agencies and organizations involved with governing natural resource use and management will be open to you, such as in local authorities and regions, county administrative boards and other authorities. You may also work for private companies or other national and international organizations involved in natural resource and land use issues.
