Project Management of parallel large-scale projects in the green transition
The purpose of this research project is to explore and assess the potential and prerequisites for applying digital twins for project management and control of large-scale industrial projects from a municipal community planning perspective. More specifically, it is intended to investigate how a digital twin can be used to promote dialogue and cooperation between different stakeholders, as well as how these can contribute to balancing different values and interests that include municipalities, industry partners and other social groups in a parallel mega-project environment within the green industrial transition.
Formas grants Luleå University of Technology, Luleå Municipality and Sweco a 3-year research project "Project Management of parallel large-scale projects in the green transition: a study of the role of the digital twin within the framework of Luleå industrial park".
The project focus on the green industrial transformation in Luleå and is based on current events within the Luleå industrial park and ongoing work within the municipality to develop a digital twin to support urban development work. The work in Luleå Industripark is now entering a phase with the development of a construction coordination organization and thus allows unique opportunities to follow the project management and construction coordination organization's work during 2024 and beyond, to begin studies of how digital twins can be applied in community building from a municipal community planning and mega project management perspective and together with Luleå Industripark's core stakeholders to evaluate possible applications of the digital twin for the project management and construction coordination challenges that involved actors face. Luleå Industripark therefore appears as an interesting case study.
The project goals include:
- Identify central and potentially conflicting interests and values (climatic, economic and social) in the green industrial transition within Luleå industrial park
- Identify potential and conditions in Luleå industrial park regarding application of digital twin for construction coordination within municipal community planning.
- Propose critical considerations in the development and application of digital twin for municipal community planning when managing parallel mega-projects in the green transition.
- Establish strategic cooperation with Luleå industrial park. For competence development through the sharing of knowledge and experiences.
The project concerns follow-up research of the Luleå industrial park with a particular focus on the integration and use of the digital twin within the framework of project management, governance and community planning. Implementation of the project is divided into three work packages
- Preliminary study
- Focus study "digital construction coordination"
- Results feedback and identification of knowledge and competence needs
